Mental Health & Wellbeing
We are committed to the holistic development of our pupils and ensure that they have access to a wide range of therapeutic interventions. The purpose of an intervention is to address a barrier to learning, or to enhance health, happiness and well-being thereby enabling the child or young person to develop to the best of their ability.
Our therapeutic work is designed to unlock barriers to participation in education, so that all our children can achieve highly and can make the most of every opportunity we offer. Discrete therapeutic interventions at school are delivered by a highly skilled team of clinical staff.
These interventions sit alongside a classroom experience that integrates therapeutic approaches on a one-to-one, small- group and whole-class basis.
Thrive is a therapeutic approach designed to support children with their emotional and social development. It is a whole-school approach, based around current studies of effective learning and current models of child development, in order to help the school understand the needs being signalled by children’s behaviour.
Thrive at Northcroft School
The Thrive approach provides practical strategies to support children and young people’s emotional development. It uses an online assessment, to help us understand a pupil’s current needs and create an action plan with clear, supportive next steps.
Thrive can be used for individual pupils and the whole classes. Activities and techniques are often included in PSHE sessions to support well-being, relationships and readiness to learn.
We know that how we feel affects how we behave, and both can affect learning. Helping pupils recognise and understand their emotions can support confidence, regulation and progress over time.
Some children and young people may need extra support with emotional development, either for a short period or longer term. Thrive supports this by strengthening positive relationships with staff and peers, and giving pupils safe, structured ways to explore and talk about their feelings.
