Personal Development

Personal Development: Inclusion and Wellbeing

Personal Development is at the heart of life at Northcroft School. Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive, therapeutic, and responsive, ensuring that all students particularly those with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs are able to feel safe, belong, and engage in learning.

Our approach is underpinned by the Thrive Approach, recognising that emotional development and wellbeing are fundamental to successful learning. When students join the school, they complete a Thrive assessment to identify their developmental starting point. This informs a personalised action plan, which is embedded into daily practice and reviewed regularly to ensure sustained progress over time.

We recognise that many students arrive with disrupted educational experiences or unmet needs, and therefore prioritise developmental readiness alongside academic progress.

Across KS3 and KS4, we provide:

  • A strong focus on emotional wellbeing, regulation and resilience
  • Explicit teaching of social skills, communication, and self-awareness
  • Consistent routines and clear boundaries to create safety and predictability
  • Relational and restorative approaches to behaviour, supporting reflection and repair
  • High levels of adult support and attunement, enabling students to re-engage with learning
