Personal Development

Personal Development is central to the vision and daily practice of Northcroft School. As an independent specialist SEMH provision, we recognise that pupils’ social, emotional and mental health needs must be addressed in order for academic learning to be successful. Our curriculum is therefore designed to promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development and to prepare them for life in modern Britain.

Personal development is delivered through a coherent, structured programme that includes the Thrive Approach, PSHE education (including Relationships, Sex and Health Education), enrichment opportunities, therapeutic support, physical education, and community engagement. The intent is to enable pupils to develop confidence, resilience, independence, and the skills required to become active, responsible members of society.

Thrive-Informed Provision

Northcroft School’s personal development offer is underpinned by the Thrive Approach. All pupils complete a Thrive assessment on entry, which identifies their current developmental stage and specific social-emotional needs. Individual action plans are created to support pupils to achieve “right-time” development, using targeted strategies embedded throughout the school day.

Progress is closely monitored through regular reviews (typically every six weeks), ensuring that interventions remain responsive and effective. In addition, each class maintains a social development action plan aligned with the PSHE curriculum, supporting pupils to:

  • Develop emotional regulation and self-awareness

  • Build positive relationships and communication skills

  • Strengthen self-esteem and identity

  • Improve readiness for learning

  • Increase independence and resilience

This structured approach ensures that therapeutic support and education are integrated rather than delivered separately.

Curriculum and Enrichment

Personal development is woven throughout the formal and informal curriculum. Pupils participate in a wide range of enrichment activities designed to broaden experiences, develop talents, and support engagement with the wider world. These opportunities take place weekly and are often delivered within the community to promote real-life application of skills.

Key components include:

  • A sequenced PSHE curriculum covering health, wellbeing, relationships, safety, and citizenship

  • Regular assemblies promoting values, equality, diversity, and British Values

  • Mental health support, including structured check-ins and therapeutic input

  • Physical education that promotes teamwork, wellbeing, and healthy lifestyles

  • Creative, outdoor, and vocational experiences

  • Community visits that build confidence and social competence

These experiences enable pupils to practise and transfer skills beyond the classroom, supporting successful participation in society.

Preparing Pupils for Life in Modern Britain

Northcroft School actively promotes British Values, equality, and respect for diversity. Pupils learn about democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect through both curriculum content and daily school life. Opportunities are provided for pupils to express views, make choices, and take responsibility in a safe and supportive environment.

The school also prioritises preparation for adulthood by developing practical life skills, social understanding, and independence appropriate to each pupil’s age and needs.

Reintegration to Mainstream Education

Across Amegreen Education schools, we are committed to achieving the best possible long-term outcomes for every child and young person. For some pupils, this may include a successful return to mainstream education at key points in their educational journey.

Where this is appropriate, desired by the young person and their family, and supported by professionals, we work collaboratively with local authorities, families, and receiving schools to plan a carefully managed transition. Our approach prioritises readiness, wellbeing, and sustained success.
